Three people in Japan were arrested for posting messages threatening
violent crime on bulletin boards. They were released after a common
virus was found in their computers. This virus lets the attacker
hijack a PC and access the internet remote-control. The PC owners
say they noticed nothing.

The police were misled by the IP address.

This kind of crime is without precedent in Japan. The police are
still searching for the true criminal.

One of the victims says he believes his computer was infected when
he downloaded a free image processing tool. He is quite famous as
director of the animated TV series "机动战士 GUNDAM 00"
(机动战士 高達 / 敢达 ).

The response in Japan is as usual. The media contacted specialists in
computer security companies and they prescribe frequent updates of the
OS and anti-virus software. And they tell us we must not to touch
"free" (免费) software from shady sources. Some observers say that
this kind of virus will make police work very difficult.

It's hard for an average Joe to tell the difference of OSS and free
(as in free beer) software.
The name "Free Software" is also a little bit misleading.

When teaching the average user about free software, keep this in mind:
自由软件立于礼让.

When we receive something for free, we say "thanks". Free beer does
not last long, especially when we don't say "thanks".
